"Apprentice" Star Bill Rancic to Promote Embryo Adoption Awareness

Posted Jun 21 2011 12:00am
Bill Rancic, winner of the hit reality TV show “Apprentice” and co-star of Giuliana and Bill has teamed up with the National Fertility Association's RESOLVE in order to help raise awareness for embryo adoption .

The awareness campaign titled Destination: Family is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and is aimed to help bring more attention to the little-known option for infertile couples called embryo adoption.
Embryo adoption is when an infertile couple is given an embryo that can be implanted into their uterus during an IVF procedure. Each year thousands of couples undergo IVF procedures from which multiple embryos are created. However, most couples only end up using just a few of their created embryos leaving many left over to either be discarded, frozen for later use, or donated to research.
Several years ago fertility clinics recognized the waste that was occurring with discarding frozen embryos that could potentially become viable children for other infertile couples. Thus, embryo adoption came into existence.
It has been estimated that there are over 400,000 frozen embryos in fertility clinics across the United States that are waiting to be adopted. However, despite the large amount of embryos available, many are still unaware of this option.
Adopting an embryo is typically a less-expensive option than egg donation NYC because the embryos already exist. With an egg donor NYC the woman must undergo very expensive testing, medication administration, and surgical procedures which drive up the cost of donated eggs. Therefore, using an egg donor typically runs around $15,000-$20,000 dollars where as embryo adoption can range between $6,000-$18,000 dollars.
Rancic and RESOLVE will be promoting the use of mydestinationfamily.org which is a multimedia resource for couples providing information about the embryo donation process along with health, legal, and mental issues that may accompany the process.
