Stress and anxiety can affect people in many different ways, but most of us feel the effects of stress through tension in the neck and shoulders. For some people, muscle tension can become a chronic problem, causing constant pain or discomfort which can spread to the arms and lower back. In these cases, anti-inflammatory drugs, hot compresses and ice packs may no longer provide relief. There are other ways, however, to alleviate stress-related pain.

Among the different treatment options used on patients suffering from neck pain, acupuncture therapy is slowly gaining ground. According to the World Health Organization, acupuncture has been proven effective for treating 28 different conditions, including neck pain; and it has been shown to improve dozens of other symptoms and conditions, as well. It is often used as the primary treatment for neck and arm pain and sometimes as a complimentary alternative to physical therapy or chiropractic care .

Though exercise and relaxation techniques can sometimes help release pain and tension due to stress and anxiety, poor body posture and repetitive motions, they are not always effective. This is especially the case where pain has spread to the shoulders and arms. In these cases, doctors often recommend acupuncture.
Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing practices in the world, and it has gained popularity in the United States in the last few decades. It involves inserting thin, sterile needles into various acupuncture points on the body in order to correct imbalances in the body. It can be painless, safe, and extremely effective when performed by a certified practitioner – and patients typically see results after a few sessions.

Traditional acupuncture is often complemented with cupping therapy, which is also effective for treating pain stemming from muscular tension and stress. Cupping involves applying small glass cups on the skin using gentle suction and leaving the cups on for three to fifteen minutes. This is done in order to

  • Reduce local inflammation
  • Increase blood circulation to help nourish the muscles and nerves

Cupping, like acupuncture, is effective for treating chronic pain in the neck, shoulders and upper back caused as a result of stress. For people with neck and arm pain caused by structural problems – and not necessarily stress – spinal adjustments will likely be necessary. This can be done through chiropractic care.
