Acting Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education Michael Yudin travels to Toledo tomorrow for a visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. Academy for Boys, at 10 a.m. ET. Yudin will meet with school officials and visit classrooms in recognition of the school's continuous improvement. Yudin's visit is part of a series of events being hosted by the U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and several senior Department officials across the Great Lakes region through Friday. The various events are part of the Department's "Education and Economy" bus tour and will highlight education reforms that are providing students of all ages with the knowledge and skills they need to be part of a well-educated workforce.

On Wednesday, Assistant Education Secretary Brenda Dann-Messier traveled to Toledo to visit to the University of Toledo Innovation Center, where she discussed the importance of career and technical education. On Tuesday morning, Yudin was in Cleveland and participated in a "Let's Move! event to focus on promoting healthy lifestyles, reducing childhood obesity, and increasing physical and nutrition awareness. On Tuesday afternoon, he participated in a meeting hosted by U.S. Rep. Marcia Fudge with Cleveland Public Schools CEO Eric Gordon and more than a dozen area school superintendents and other school leaders. They addressed issues confronting public school districts and had an opportunity to share feedback with Yudin about federal education programs.

Duncan stopped in Toledo Wednesday evening to end the first day of his bus tour with a visit to the Toledo Federation of Teachers Union Hall. He joined Toledo Superintendent Jerome Pecko for a meeting with local labor leaders to learn more about their peer review panel and to talk about the role labor management collaboration plays in supporting students and driving school success.
