banana spider, brazilian wandering spider, viagra, erectile dysfunction
Men with ED (erectile dysfunction) will go to great lengths to straighten out their malady. In accordance with the Daily Mail, the secret to priapism now runs on eight hairy legs. Scientists at the Medical College of Georgia believe the venom of the Brazilian wandering spider (aka banana spider and Phoneutria nigriventer) holds the key to eliminating impotence problems.
Four hour penile erection merely from an arachnid attack
The Brazilian wandering spider bites can have side effects on humans. An erection lasting 4 hours is one of these. Dr. Kenia Nunes, a physiologist at the college, told the Daily Mail the venom of Phoneutria nigriventer contains “a very rich mixture of several toxins” that lead to priapism, a condition that causes the penis to stay erect for hrs.
That specific impact is not desirable because it can be painful. Loss of muscle control and having trouble breathing without anti-venom can trigger death by asphyxiation which is other side effects of the neurotoxin PhTx3.
Try PnTx2-6 instead
Lab rats that had high blood pressure would get pain-free erections from lower dosages of the PnTx2-6 peptide venom. PnTx2-6 helps the brain send the signal to the penis for the valve to the corpora cavernosa to open, allowing blood to fill the cavity like air into a balloon, producing erection.
There will need to be more studies done to see if this helps women with sexual dysfunction although Dr. Nunes believes it does.
“The toxin was able to normalize the erectile dysfunction in these animals,” wrote Nunes in a Journal of Sexual Medicine study.
Difference between Brazilian spider venom and Viagra
Even though both Viagra and banana spider venom work in about the same way physically, Nunes said the variations might make it so a choice to Viagra may be the Phoneutria nigriventer venom, reports MSNBC.
“This is good because we know that some patients don’t respond to conventional therapy,” said Nunes.
Spider considered very dangerous
South America is typically where a Brazilian wandering spider is found. Still, in bunches of bananas being delivered, the spider has traveled into Central America and North America.
The spider is considered an extremely venomous spider though. The 2010 Guinness book of World Records stated that it was probably the most venomous spider. The University of Washington’s Burke Museum’s Rod Crawford explained that the venom is dangerous. Still, only 10 out of every 7,000 people bit will die from the Brazilian wandering spider.
