She’s being called a Christmas miracle. Baby Noel is healthy and thriving at a Philadelphia hospital, despite being abandoned and nearly mistaken for garbage just five hours after she was born.

Philadelphia police released these pictures of "Baby Noel" late Thursday afternoon, hoping they might somehow trigger someone to come forward with information about the baby's mother and the circumstances surrounding the baby's birth.

Two men were picking up trash on the side of the street outside a daycare and spotted a brown cardboard box. Homer Keller says he was prepared to throw it out with the rest of the garbage but suddenly stopped.

Mistaken for trash: Baby Noel was found in this cardboard box and nearly thrown out with the rest of the garbage on the street

‘I heard a little sound like a baby or a kitten or something. I thought it was a kitten, and I pulled the cover back off of it, and it was a baby,’ Mr Keller told ABC News in Philadelphia.

The weak cry came from a baby girl swaddled in old clothes that doctors say was just five hours old. Police have no idea who the mother is or what drove her to leave her baby on a sidewalk in late December.

She left the five-and-a-half pound girl wrapped in a blanket, two robes and woman’s sweater.

The newborn, who has been nicknamed ‘Baby Noel,’ is miraculously healthy despite her rough entry into the world. Doctors expect to release her from St. Christopher Children’s Hospital in time for Christmas.

She will spend the holiday in a foster home.

‘She’s in really good condition. We’re very fortunate with the timing, weather and the church finding the baby,’ Philadelphia Police spokesman Ray Evers told

‘We had a lot of things that fell into place. If it was any closer, the baby would have been thrown out with the trash. It was scary close.’

Authorities want to talk to the mother because she could have dropped her Baby Noel off at a hospital and with infant would have been taken in without any questions.

Instead, she abandoned her daughter on a street corner.

Additionally, socially services professionals hope to place the baby with family members if any are willing and qualified even if the mother gave up her right to care for the child.
