Tip for dealing with chronic pain and illness

Posted Mar 22 2010 12:00am

If you are dealing with a chronic health issue, remember this: you are not just your body... you are a spiritual being who is temporarily using this physical body. You (the real you, your SoulSelf, your energy) are so much bigger than your body in this physical space. You, as a spiritual being, are healthy, whole, and beautiful. The health condition you have is happening to your body. When you have a flare up, try to remember that this is happening to your physical body AND that you are so much more than your physical body. I'm not suggesting that you ignore your body or your symptoms. It is important to pay attention to your symptoms and take care of your body. However, when you have a chronic and/or life threatening illness, sometimes it is hard to connect with anything but your body and your symptoms. This can decrease your spiritual and emotional well-being making it harder to cope with your condition.

This perspective helps me stay emotionally and spiritually healthy despite what is happening in my body. I've been focusing on this idea many times each day and I feel so much better (stronger, happier, more joyful) even though my body is still experiencing the pain, fatigue, nausea, and brain fog. When I feel my energy shrinking or my mood changing, I imagine myself as my SoulSelf - a brilliant golden-white light. I imagine this beautiful light/energy filling my body and moving well beyond my body, stretching out to connect with the Universe/Spirit/God. I remember that I am here to contribute positivity to the world and I can do that no matter what my body is doing. I hope this helps you too. If you are struggling with chronic health issues, please feel free to share ways that you cope. Sending oodles of positive energy and smiles to you!
