They That Wait Upon the Lord (The Importance of Being Patient)

Married to an Unbeliever with Karen Evans

Patience, a fruit of the Spirit

Hello Ladies!  I hope you all have had a blessed week.  Please feel free to share with the  "Married to an Un-Believer" group a testimony you may have.  We'd love to hear from.  So, let's talk about the importance of being patient.  It is so important to have patience while God is working on our husbands.  When you understand that there is going to be a waiting period between your request to God and His answer, you will have a peace that surpasses all Impatient understanding.  Know and believe that God is in control and His timing is perfect.  If it were up to us, our husbands would not only be serving the Lord but would also be involved in some type of ministry.  And he'd be doing it NOW.  If this is your heart's desire - then let me encourage you to be patient with what God is doing.  Don't give up!  Keep praying for your husband even when it seems impossible.  Always remember that there is nothing too impossible for God!  It would bless me to no end to see my husband involved in some type of ministry.  But for now, I remain blessed for who he is.

Throughout the years of my Christian living, I have often heard that praying for patience is not such a good thing to pray for.  That if you pray for patience, you soon will regret it.  The Bible tells us that patience is one of the fruits of the Spirit.  It is a gift from God and a treasure to behold.  Here's what the Bible says about having patience:

A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense. Proverbs 19:11

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control  Galatians 5:22, 23

I needed to be patient when it came to my husband.  God had given me a desire to want to be patient.  And I thank Him for that.  I needed to stop and hear what my husband had to say.  God will show you what your husband doesn't understand about being a Christian.  It may sound a bit strange, but I thought it was kind of cute when my husband asked me what "being born again" meant or "walking in the Spirit".  I took the opportunity God had given to me to explain what he didn't understand.  Short and simple.  I prayed for patience.  And believe you me when I tell you that my patience was tried!  I found myself in traffic.  I found myself behind that lady at the grocery store with her box of coupons and her check book.  But I also found myself filled with a peace that I know only God can give.  His presence was evident as He blessed me with the gift of patience.  It's so much better than being impatient.  I often reflect on the story of Joseph.  Joseph was sold as a slave.  He later became Potiphar's, one of Pharaoh's officials, attendant and in charge of his household.  As you read Genesis 39-41 ) you will see that he was sent to prison.  What did he do while he was in prison?  What was he doing as he waited to hear from God?  He was the best servant he could be.  God gave him favor with the guards and he was put in charge of all the prisoners.  He was eventually released from prison and became second in command in all of Egypt.

Things To Do While Waiting

  • Pray - I keep a journal of prayer requests of my friends and people in general.  This also helps my prayer life as I build my relationship with God.
  • Begin a personal bible study.  Be a student of the Bible.
  • Redecorate a room in your home.
  • Learn new recipes and share them with your husband, family and friends.
  • Write letters to friends and family.

The Waiting Room

Do you like waiting in the waiting room at the doctor's office.  I really don't mind it so much any more The Wait is Over these days.  Okay, over an hour is a bit much.  When you go to your scheduled doctor's appointment, you already know that there is going to be a wait.  Why not make the best of it.  You never know how God wants you to use that time.  We can pray for the doctors, their patients, read a book or practice our texting skills.  But one thing is for sure - you will eventually see the doctor.  It's kind of similar when I put in my requests to God through prayer.  I then need to wait on the Lord.  He will answer.  Ladies, you will be pleasantly surprised as to how this all helps your patience with your husband's decision to surrender his whole being to Christ.  Here's what the Bible says about waiting:

Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Ps. 27:14

We wait in hope for the Lord, He is our help and our shield. Ps. 33:20

But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.  Ro. 8:25

May the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.  May the blessings of our Lord Jesus fill your days with joy and may our husbands see the light of our Lord in all that we do.  Remember to visit the "Married to an Un-Believer"  group.  I would love to hear from you.

Karen Evans
