This is the story of the best meal I’ve ever had.
Mercado Central , Santiago, Chile
They caught the seafood steps away from where I ate it. I have no idea what find of seafood is actually in it. I’m not sure they know what kind of seafood they have. Details.
During January and February of 2009, I traveled around South America for 6 weeks with my sister. We backpacked, shared rooms with strangers and spent many, many nights on over night buses. I got sick (have you ever had nonstop diarrhea on a 12 hour bus?), we got tired, we laughed, we cried, we nearly killed each other. It was the best 6 weeks of my life. And we ate! A LOT!! The fruit and vegetables were AMAZING!! The seafood spectacular. Apparently everyone else in the world thinks the ham is great because they put it in EVERYTHING. The wine is dirt cheap and really good.
Most cities in South America have a space where vendors set up food to sell. Like a farmers market. But everyday. And really loud because all the vendors are suggesting (or yelling) for you to buy their food. The paella was consumed at a tiny table set up in the middle of this crazy market. Order at the counter, wait a couple minutes, and eat the food. With wine. Good. So good.
That’s all I’ve got!
