According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, veterinary technician employment is expected to increase faster than other occupations in the job market. There is a high demand in the current career capacity as more and more pet lovers are concern about their animals' health. If you think this career is suitable for you, take a proactive way to get it started.
Step 1: The very first step is to complete the educational requirements. You can obtain a 2-year degree program that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association from any of the veterinary technician school in United States. You can either pursue the course in the campus or through distance learning. It is a MUST to attend the degree program before you are allowed to sit for the final examination.
Step 2: After obtaining the academic qualification, it is necessary for you to take and pass the state licensing exam, i.e. the Veterinary Technician National Exam. It is a 4-hour test which covers surgical preparation, animal nursing, laboratory procedures, pharmacology, and other related topics. The exam includes oral test, written test and practical test to evaluate the candidates' competency level.
Step 3 You are advised to search for a job in any veterinary hospital to improve your knowledge and fulfill your internship requirements. It would be ideal if you could get a position that allows you to cover all areas of your study, including clinical, surgical and dental procedures as well as physical examinations.
Step 4 Enroll yourself to be a member of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America. This association offers opportunities of networking and skills enhancement through continuing education credit.
Step 5 You may start this profession right after obtaining the license. You are now a qualified veterinary technician.
