Shy and sensitive and drinking at parties

Posted Dec 08 2009 6:39pm

Dr. Elaine Aron notes: “Not all sensitive people are shy; not all shy people are sensitive. “But especially if you are both, although you may have one or two drinks to get through parties, you probably don’t drink very much compared with other people.

“You need to know and respect your drinking comfort zone. If you are a highly sensitive person, you are probably more sensitive to alcohol. It’s one of the many ways you’re different. It’s a good idea, right away, to own those differences.”

From post “Introverts and Parties: Just Add Alcohol?” on the Psychology Today blog The Introvert’s Corner by Sophia Dembling.

Many highly sensitive and creative people use alcohol and other drugs, perhaps to deal with that sensitivity and their feelings of being overwhelmed in social situations – such as parties or public appearances.

Johnny Depp says he felt intimidated by crowds and public events during his early career: “I literally had to be drunk to be able to speak and get through it.”
