Proverbs 3

Posted Aug 26 2011 9:03am

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-7)

Trusting the Lord isn’t always easy, especially when a dreaded phoned call comes in the middle of the night or when someone with a tear-stained face rings your door bell. When facing emotional or tragic situations, sometimes the only thing we can do is trust God.

Trusting Jesus We immediately want to ask why and want to know what happened. We think our heart will feel better if we know the answers, but we are to “lean not on your own understanding.” God knows we will want to understand but sometimes, we aren't immediately able to.  He knows we try to make sense of senseless situations.  He knows the harder we try to bend our thinking like a pretzel, we will still never understand certain situations.  Why is it tough to trust the Lord with our shattered heart?

I believe it is connected to two things: our humanness and our relationship with God.  First, our initial response is to want to understand the hurt and then do something to fix it.  Second, we are presented with a choice and need to choose to trust Him with everything, which takes time to learn.

Receiving tragic news is always difficult because our emotions are touched.  We grieve, cry and ask many questions, yet choosing to trust God with all of it helps us to continue to move forward as we heal.
