Positive Psychology and Coaching

Posted Sep 14 2008 5:23pm

I imagine when most of you think of a psychologist you think "shrink." You probably think of psychologists "analyzing" problems and treating the mentally ill. Well, if this is what you think, you would be partially correct. For many years psychology, (particularly clinical psychology) has been focused on the study and treatment of mental illness.

However, there are a growing number of psychologists who are involved in the relatively new movement in the field of psychology called positive psychology - the scientific study of happiness and optimal functioning. Positive psychology focuses on mental wellness and how to enhance it. This new movement is gaining momentum especially with help from recent press, such as the article in The Wall Street Journal (September 26, 2006) - Therapy That Keeps On the Sunny Side of Life.

Positive psychology was founded in 1998 by Martin Seligman, Ph.D. when he was president of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Seligman called upon psychologists to begin focusing more on happiness and character strengths rather than on the treatment of mental illness.

Personally, I have been delighted to see this focus on strengths and wellness in psychology. I chose to become a psychologist so that I could help people reach their full potential and enhance their overall life satisfaction. I knew that I did not want to do traditional psychotherapy with a focus on diagnosing and treating mental illness. I believe that psychologists and psychology need to broaden the perspective and focus. I believe that we all possess a tremendous wealth of inner resources and potential. We already have everything we need to succeed - it's just a matter of connecting with our resources and strengths. Positive psychologists are in an excellent position to help people discover and build upon their strengths.

As a psychologist and life coach, I help you tap into your inner resources and unleash your full potential. I will help you identify your strengths and learn to utilize these strengths. Through a blend of eastern and western traditions I help you learn to achieve balance in your life, increase your sense of vision and purpose in life, enhance creativity and intuition, find meaning in life, and cultivate feelings of peace and joy.
