I agree with the other posts Toastmasters is a great way to increase your public speaking skills and your confidence. You had mentioned confidence so that you could approach anyone in your example and I would like to offer a few additional thoughts:
1) On a scale of 1-10 (1= low and 10=high), how would you rate your confidence overall (not just in the public speaking arena)? Creating some awareness around your confidence level can give you some good insight and help you to determine additional ways to increase your confidence. If you gave yourself a score lower than a 10, consider the following question, "What do I want to do/can I do to increase my score?"
2) List some things that you have always wanted to try, but have been afraid to and pick at least one thing and make a commitment to do it. And here is the important part, once you have done so, be sure to celebrate your accomplishment.
3) Consider some times when you have felt confident. What helped you to feel confident during those times? Utilizing those experiences to build from will also help you to continue to strenghten your confidence level.
4) Be you and come from your heart. (As fluffy as that may sound.) Your heart is where all the good stuff lies.
Enjoy your confidence building. My hope it is that is a fruitful and strengthening experience for you.
