How can I show people that I am happy?

Posted by amydf07

I am generally a happy person... I mean sure I know I could be much happier if I was in shape but either way... People always ask me at work, "why don't you ever smile" and I feel like wow should I be walking around the office with a smile on my face just because I'm going to the bathroom? I mean I love my job and I have no real reason to be grumpy but I just don't smile for no reason. How can I get people to know that I am happy and nice and approachable but without being fake to myself?

Thanks for a great question, Amy - and you have a great smile on your photo (it looks pretty authentic to me!).  There's a saying about smiling - that if you put a smile on your face, you often end up actually feeling like smiling (even though you may not have at the begin).  It's got to do with pathways in your brain that get stimulated by the facial expression.  But that doesn't really answer your question...

Does everyone ask you that at work, or is it just certain people?  Is at work that you don't feel like smiling, or would you say that you generally aren't a person who smiles much?  I think how you feel inside is more important than how others perceive you, and I applaud you for wanting to be authentic, not fake.

For a person to know that you are happy and nice and approachable, it probably would just take a conversation with you for them to realize that.  If they're waiting for a smile as an invitation to start talking (and they're not going to get it!), perhaps you should initiate the conversation...just some thoughts!

Good luck and let me know if you have any comments, I'd love to hear them.
