Don't wait until the time is "perfect" - act now!

Posted Oct 18 2008 11:20pm
How many things in your life are you procrastinating, because you think that you aren’t ready, or because the circumstances aren’t quite perfect yet?  Well, I have some news for you: in most situations, you’re less likely to get the outcome you want by waiting until the timing is “just right”.    Here’s why…

I know this idea might not make sense – after all, why would we want to act, when the timing isn’t right yet, or we don’t feel we’re ready?  The thing is, most of the goals that we have in life are more easily achieved as a result of real life experience that comes from taking action.

For example, one of my passions is working with the media, particularly television.  Someone with the “time is right” mentality might suggest that I take media courses, practice extensively, and maybe even hire a media coach, before venturing out and making that all-important “first impression”.  I say: wrong!  All that additional education can be very helpful, indeed, but without a doubt, the very best education of all comes through DOING.

I started doing television appearances a few years ago when someone asked me to, with no training or experience, learning as I went along.  I’m continually working at higher levels of media, and the day that my really “big break” comes – guess what?  I’ll be ready!  Not because I studied and studied and waited for that “just right” moment, but because I took action the first time the opportunity was offered to me, and have been acting (and occasionally failing, and learning from it) ever since.

I’ve been reading Robert Kiyosaki’s books lately (author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad ), and he talks a lot about this, too.  For example, he would far rather see someone make a bad real estate investment, than make no investment at all.  “Buy why?” someone might ask.  “How could it be a good experience to lose so much money?”  The thing is, often the only way we really learn, and figure out how to EVER do things right in the future, is through our mistakes.  You’re going to make mistakes, there’s no way around it.  Mistakes are fabulous – because hopefully, you won’t make them again, and will ask better questions, and will see the situation with new, wiser eyes, the next time you have an opportunity.

Don’t expect yourself to do things perfectly the first time.  Know that the best way for you to become a master in any area, is to simply start taking action.  The sooner you start, and the more willing you are to learn from your mistakes, the faster you’ll be living that “perfect” experience you’ve been waiting for all this time!
