Circle of life - messages from a praying mantis

Posted Sep 14 2008 3:54pm

I am aware of the circle of life today. Over the weekend, I enjoyed the company of a praying mantis that decided to make my patio its home. It has actually been there for a couple of weeks. I was so delighted to see this wonderful little creature. I believe it showed up for me because I had been thinking about praying mantises (there is a long story here about healing beings). Praying mantis are not often seen around here, but I have had the pleasure of seeing several recently!

Mantis_2 Anyway, this praying mantis was great fun to watch. They are very interesting insects. According to Animal Speak by Ted Andrews the praying mantis can teach us about the power of stillness. So for me, my little mantis friend was a messenger of healing and the power of stillness.

This morning, I went to check on my little friend and it was face to face with a spider. I wasn't sure whether the praying mantis was after the spider or the other way around. I wanted to intervene in case my little mantis friend was in trouble. Then I decided not to... I might ruin my little friend's breakfast! I figured that it is not my place to interfere.

I went back to check on my little mantis friend a bit ago and I think that the spider was the victor! I am sad that I hadn't helped my little friend! I know that it is simply the circle of life. I know the spider has a right to eat too. But... I still feel a bit sad for my little friend. (Perhaps I am a bit silly for getting attached to a bug!)

Rather than dwell on the idea that I could have saved this praying mantis, I am choosing to see this as a lesson in letting go. My little mantis friend is giving me yet another gift! I will continue to heed the messages this little creature brought to me.
