The story of
William Kamkwamba is truly inspired and inspiring. Faced with the economic downward spiral of his family from poverty to utter destitution caused by a drought exacerbated by global warming, young William was forced to drop out of fee-based public schooling to help his family, even though the prospects of subsistence farming were about to go from arduous to impossible.
Not to be thwarted by Mother Nature, William stumbled upon an unlikely answer, constructing a windmill to enable irrigation through electrical pumping of ground water. Knowing next to nothing about science,
William made it happen! His sheer grit, determination and success landing William a spot at TED not once
but twice – and a book deal to boot. I encourage you to watch his 2 appearances at TED linked below followed by his recent appearance on
The Daily Show to promote his book. After learning William's story, I know that you will see just how far the potential of green living reaches.
