Although not generally marketed as a solution for your issue, I found that taking a broad-spectrum amino acid supplement hardened my finger nails, caused my hair to grow faster (including my whiskers) and boosted my hemoglobin rating when I donate blood even though I stopped taking a ferrous oxide pill. I am fond of Amino 1000 from GNC. You'll find it at

Taking a Biotin supplement will help strengthen your fingernails.  It will take a couple of months before you notice a difference.  This will help your fingernails become thicker and therefore split and break much less.

I too have tried many things and I DID find something that REALLY WORKED!  It's an herb called 'Silica.'  However, I broke out with hives/itching, so I was allergic to Silica.  My nails looked wonderful for the first time in many years.  I'm now in search of something else.  I've already tried gelatin tablets, biotin, some polishes at Sally's, and spent a small fortune on several other things, so I'm still looking for a 'sure thing' on here.  Perhaps I should now try the amino acid supplement - didn't think of that.

Thank you for your suggestion, I will definitely look into Amino 1000. I'm already taking many supportive supplements including Biotin, but like other post said, it will take mos. to see if it works. Thanks so much for sharing your experience!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, I will indeed check into Amino 1000. I am taking the biotin and other supplements, but can't tell yet if the biotin helps as the other poster said. I will post a reply about results of the Amino 1000. Thanks again!
toots -   ain't that the way it often happens, :)...when we 'crave' what wer'e allergic to, or maybe like the Silica maybe it's something we know wer'e deficient in, but our body rejects it. Then, wer'e off again to find a solution our body WILL accept! Thanks for posting!
