What green products work for you?

Posted by Kristen D.

Finally major grocery store chains are changing their tunes and offering more "green" alternatives, especially when it comes to household cleansers. What's great too is that their not priced much higher than the other products we've likely used before society focused on "greening" their lives and surroundings.

Have you tried these new and improved (for the environment) products? How do they work for you? What are your favorites?

My wife Cat and I have experimented with 7th Generation and Shaklee green products, especially cleansers. The results have been mixed. In terms of laundry detergent, we were saddened to see a significantly poorer result than with convention products. We have a whole-house water filtration system and thus are able to use the Costco house brand laundry granules. While nowhere near as safe for the environment as the 7th Generation and Shaklee products, we are able to use the tiniest quantities of the product and do very well.

The good news is that the kitchen and bathroom cleansers from both brands have served us very well and we recommend them gladly.

We also really like the 7th Generation recycled paper towels. They can be difficult to find (Whole Foods is the best place in Central Florida) but well worth the the trouble of locating.

Greening the Cleaning is a great all purpose cleanser. Green Works seems to also work well although the Clorox connection makes me unsure of the "green" aspect of the product. Method makes a great dish and hand soap, and daily shower cleaner. Their granite, stainless steel, and wood cleaning products haven't performed well with me at all. Sometimes regular soap and water work better. For general cleaning, a water vinegar solution is tried and true, low cost option to clean your home without any chems.
