Study Says Baby Products Contain Toxic Flame Retardants.  Are Your Kids at Risk?

A new study shows that the foam padding used to protect children in baby products can contain toxic flame retardants.  Researchers tested polyurethane foam samples from 101 products and found potentially dangerous flame retardants in 80 percent.   The study , which was published in "Environmental Science & Technology," was called a wake-up call by some health experts.  Although the study does not mention brand names, CBS News learned that one suspect flame retardant was found in three Evenflo car seats and one Snuggli baby carrier.

I  would have taken more precautions with my first two daughters if I would have had the information about flame retardants from the study. I certainly would have learned all I could about ways to reduce their risks to harmful flame retardants and definitely would have stayed away from mattresses with PBDE's.  These days, although I am NOT trying to have anymore babies, I would totally go for organic baby mattresses like from L.A. Baby.  Both the organic mattress and the waterproof organic cover make it easy to surround your baby with safe, organic fibers when she is in snooze land.

A USDA organic cotton layer and natural coconut fiber crib mattress is bonded with natural latex for the perfect firm support for your baby. Includes an organic cotton waterproof cover.
  • 240 Coil innerspring
  • Includes the "must have" waterproof separate Organic cotton cover on mattress which is provided
  • Heat tempered 6-gauge border rods for extra strength
  • 100% Organic cotton layers for extra comfort

Or this  comes highly recommended and it is a steal at just $199.

Another important piece of a safe and non-toxic nursery is a foam free, organic changing pad.  Although it is a little pricey, this , is one of my favorites because it has everything I love in a changing pad: portability, safety and great eco-design.  Your baby is going to be spending a lot of years on their changing pad and it matters whether what they are laid upon will be organic and safe or synthetic and toxic.  Oh an here is another big tip, be sure to pick up a couple of the extra.  You will most certainly need them!
A less expensive choice is the  for just under $25 bucks but it has vinyl which is an ugly step child of the plastic's industry and we are finding that might not be the best option for babies.  Check out  , one of my favorite green reads by Susan Freinkel for more information about the toxic effects of plastic.

Okay so let's see, we have an organic mattress, a safe changing pad and you should also invest in a cozy organic bedding set like this which works for girls and boys! This even more adorable in person Willow Organic Baby Bedding set is even cuter in person!
  • Full line of accessories available
  • The Willow 4-Piece crib set includes a quilt, bumper, dust ruffle and fitted sheet
  • Fabrics fashioned of pure 100% organic cotton; colors from non-toxic veggie dyes
  • Care instructions: machine wash cold in gentle cycle with like colors, do not bleach, tumble dry low, and iron on lowest setting as needed
A steal at $139.95
