Share Some Sugar: A Site to Reduce Consumerism Through Sharing

Posted Aug 05 2010 12:25pm

Share some sugar logo When Keara Schwartz moved into a new place three years ago, she lacked household tools and gardening equipment. But she would have used many of these expensive items only once or twice, so she set out to borrow from her neighbors.

After that, Schwartz founded Share Some Sugar , an online community of people looking to share or borrow items from hammers to cameras, from board games to ice-cream makers.

“There’s so much stuff we already own that’s sitting around in our garages collecting dust,” Schwartz said. “Share Some Sugar allows us to share what we have and borrow what we need, which is really gratifying.”

The website (tagline: “Why buy when you can borrow?”) lets users search for items in their area and contact the owners. For anyone wary of letting just anyone borrow their sewing machine or pressure gauge, the site offers a host of social-networking features. Users can create sharing groups based on Facebook friends or e-mail address books so they can share within their already established community. Although for some, getting to know new people can be part of the fun.

“When the recession was starting to kick in, this idea took off. I also think there’s this desire to bring back that good old neighborhood community feel,” Schwartz said. “It feels good to share.”
