San Antonio’s Sewage Solution Goes to Waste

Posted Sep 22 2008 10:22am

Something is smelly in San Antonio…and it’s not just the cows!

Apparently San Antonio residents produce about 140,000 tons of biosolids (a nice term for human waste) per year, which in return produces a LOT of methane gas. And methane gas can be converted into natural gas.

So what do you get when you introduce a lot of gassy residents to a natural gas company? Up to 1.5 million cubic feet of eco-friendly gas per day!

That’s right! The city just approved a deal to allow natural gas company Ameresco Inc. to help convert San Antonio’s human waste to fuel for power generation.

This will make San Antonio the first city in the U.S. to run on human waste!

San Antonio will also recycle 90% of the “stuff” flushed down toilets, including turning solid waste into compost and using water for irrigation.

Here’s the entire story.

Despite the impending doom of hurricane Ike, Texas seems like a pretty cool place.

And I know someone who can offer a lot of “waste” to Texas once he returns home from office….
