Reduce Waste by Reusing Materials

Posted May 10 2011 2:40pm

It is important in today’s society and our changing environment to get into the habit of recycling and reusing materials. The process of recycling and even restoring items to make them usable again not only helps the environment but saves you money. When doing your home renovations you should be thinking about what could possibly be used again.

Most households are not good at recycling because they don’t have the right information. Did you know that every time you place an item into your blue or black boxes for recycling you accomplish three things?   First you are diverting that particular waste from our cities landfills and in turn extending the life of that product.   Second, products such as plastic and paper that have many purposes and many lives will be recycled into another more useful product thus extending its life.   And lastly of course you are saving your family money whether it is directly or indirectly.   In the last 8 years the products that Ottawa residents have recycled has provided 53 million in revenue from the sale of those recycled products.

Not everyone is a fan of trying to sort through their items to recycle and reuse them. They understand the value of it but they don’t have the knowledge or the time to make it happen.   When you rent a dumpster in Ottawa, your local rental company takes all the work out of it for you.   With the convenience of having the bin delivered for you and removed when you are done, we take it upon ourselves to separate the items that can be recycled and bring them to the proper disposal site.

When you are cleaning out your basement there are always those items that you could never throw out.   You have packed and repacked them, moving them from house to house…never getting used and always getting stored away.   You just can’t seem to throw these items out, and you know that someone would get good use from them.   Another great option is donation. Items such as clothing, dishes or furniture are all items that may be of use for someone else. Household appliances, pieces of wood, or various supplies that you may have used for home renovations may all be donated at your digression.

Organizations including Habitat for Humanity and The Salvation Army are both wonderful organizations that are making an effort to reduce poverty levels and distribute items to those in need. It is amazing how they can take items a person no longer wants and use them for those families that are really in need. We as a society need to work together to make our city green, it starts at home with our families.   The idea of reduce, reuse and recycle is a very simple concept that does not take that much effort to practice.
