Police Protect the Planet by Catching the Bus

Posted Nov 04 2010 2:24pm

Bus in motion Forget the squad car and the doughnut-scarfing police chief ; British police forces are greening their image. Across the pond, officers patrol by bike, foot, electric scooter , and tractor . Facing budget cuts, some officers in the English town of Clevedon are even being told to catch a bus  to save money and emissions.

Officers who get around by bus don’t respond to emergencies such as speeding motorists. They mostly deal with minor offenses and deter crime. Riding public transport might actually help them do their job, as it “allows officers to get out in the community and be as visible as possible to local residents,” according to Paul Richard, Clevedon's chief inspector.

By keeping an eye out for the safety of fellow public-transit riders, officers who bus might even encourage others in their community to .
