Music Festivals Sing a New Tune

Posted Jun 04 2010 3:32pm

Outdoor concert Hundreds of outdoor music festivals happen across the country every summer, and while some festivals still leave behind a trail of garbage and frustrated locals, others are focusing on protecting the environment and cooperating with residents.

One of these increasingly responsible music festivals is Bonnaroo , which will take place in mid-June on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee

With the help of a team of “Green Ambassadors,” Bonnaroo attendees will continue the established program of selling organic merchandise, providing biodegradable plates and cutlery, powering stages with solar panels, and recycling or reusing all petroleum-based products used at the festival.

The infamous Burning Man , which kicks off in Nevada at the end of August, also promotes an environmentally conscious mindset with a mantra of the “Six Rs:” respect, rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle, and restore .

Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair , a summer-long touring festival of all-female music artists, is also supporting the environment by directing a portion of its proceeds toward Alter Eco , a food retailer that works with small-farm co-ops to offer organic, fair trade, and carbon-neutral products.
