In October I wrote about shampoo or no-poo and four chemicals commonly found in personal care products that are health concerns. Those are fragrances, phthalates, parabens, and
Triclosan. Since then I have been looking for products that are natural in origin. Here are a few that I have tried.
No-Miss Nail Polish- I normally am not big into nail polish but my friend’s young daughter wanted to paint her toe nails so I bought this alternative healthy brand. Its list of ingredients is marketed as new and improved. The colors come from minerals in the earth. It contains no toluene, formaldehyde, or phthalates. It even has a UV inhibitor to protect nails from the sun. I bought a fun color of green and really liked it. It had no packaging – when can you say that anymore.
Ecco Bella Flower Color mascara – It has no lacquer, shellac, or alcohol. Instead it is based on clay and iron oxides. It lengthens lashes and goes on smoothly with no clumping. It was wrapped in a minimal amount of plastic film. The ingredients are said to be 100% natural but I noticed that it included methylparaben and propylparaben. I am not sure about these two chemicals so I have emailed the manufacturer about them. More later.
Perfect Organics Vegan Lip and Cheek Shimmer – I bought it as lipstick, but it can be cheek blusher too. All ingredients are organic and natural. It goes on smoothly and feels nice. I really liked this product. It was simply wrapped in a single layer of plastic film.
Lush deodorant- I was fully prepared not to like this solid chunk of deodorant that has no container (no plastic), but I really liked it! It is called aromacreme deodorant. It is a little pricey ($11.25) but I think it will last forever. It is not to be kept in the bathroom where there is high humidity because it absorbs moisture and may melt. It does not come in a plastic container but is wrapped in plastic film. I keep it in a small dish with no cover. I don’t mind picking it up with my fingers to apply it and it works great. Minimal packaging.
Lush Hybrid Solid Shampoo – This solid bar shampoo contains cleansing charcoal and licorice. It makes nice suds and leaves my hair clean and soft. I really like it. Their ad says that one bar of shampoo saves 3 - 150 ml plastic bottles. It smells nice too. The only packaging was a piece of paper that it was wrapped in. The ingredients included sodium lauryl sulfate but a footnote said that it was the amount found naturally in essential oils.
It was not hard to find all these products once I started looking. I found them at Whole Foods but they are sold at other “health food” stores too. They are easy to find on the internet. I liked all four brands and appreciate the idea that they are making products that do us and the environment no harm.
