Anything made of plastic, especially soft plastic can emit toxic fumes and residue. Plastic gives off solvent fumes and plasticizers. This is even more of a problem during hot summer months when the interior of your car can reach temperatures in excess of 140 degrees, F.
The problem can be reduced to a certain extent by wiping the car seat - and the soft plastic interior of your car with warm soapy water periodically.
Another growing concern is the number of people who leave drinking water in their cars in plastic bottles. Sippy cups, left in a hot car, can present the same problem. Glass or metal drinking containers can prevent this particular concern.
I hope this information helps.
