What is Women’s Equality Day?
At the behest of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), in 1971 the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day.”
The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. This was the culmination of a massive, peaceful civil rights movement by women that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York.
The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality. Workplaces, libraries, organizations, and public facilities now participate with Women’s Equality Day programs, displays, video showings, or other activities.
And on to the food...The
smoothie challenge is going great. I love green smoothies for breakfast and I am finding myself wanting one in the afternoon too. It could be my imagination, but I feel a little more energetic. I am not sleepy as early, and my mind seems to be working a little faster...could be anything though!
We went on an epic bike ride with some friends and I got enough exercise to last me for weeks...ok days. I got a sunburn too. Ooops!
I've had some white sugar in things I had already bought like Frosted Mini-Wheats and Raisin Bran, but I am watching it. I plan on reading the actual label of cereals from now on, as I didn't realize how sugary "healthy" cereals are. I still haven't had any soda and I haven't really had any cravings for it either.
I have had all types of smoothies so far. I used some coconut water and cashew water as bases for something different. Both were pretty sweet, but tasted good. I have started just using regular filtered water rather than soy milk, and it's fine. I think its the frozen banana that adds the creaminess anyway. I've added in greens power, chia seeds, and hemp seeds to my usual mix of liquid, fruit, and fresh greens (usually kale, spinach, and/or romaine lettuce).
I am eating salads with delicious homemade dressings from various cookbooks.
Here are a few of my smoothies.

A grown-up glass for some berry green smoothie.
I also used the blender this week to make strawberry vinaigrette from
La Dolce Vegan. Isn't it pretty?
