Green Initiatives in Ottawa

Posted Jul 12 2013 6:30pm

With all the green initiatives Capital Junk takes part in every year here in Ottawa we thought it would be a great idea to share a little of what we are doing to keep Ottawa green.  As a locally owned and operated junk removal company it is very important for us to be a part of our community and to keep the city that we live and work in clean and green!

Ottawa’s First Carbon Neutral Fleet

We are most proud of our recent status as Ottawa’s First Carbon Neutral Fleet.  As a fleet of three trucks that spend our entire days driving from Orleans to Greely to Barrhaven to Rockcliffe, we are acutely aware of the carbon footprint we are leaving on our environment.  We wanted to find a way that we could reduce our Co2 emissions from our trucks to make the most eco-friendly choices for our teams and the company.  In search of new ideas for we came across an initiative that was being offered by The Rideau Valley Conservation Foundation.  The RVCF estimated that our fleet will produce 54 tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2013 and in order to offset our Co2 emissions the RVCF will plant 400 vigorous Canadian bare-root seedlings on land as close to Ottawa as possible.  We are so excited to be a part of this great initiative and what it will mean for our company.  To celebrate this accomplishment Capital Junk descended upon City Hall on Earth Day 2013 and gave away 1000 trees for a $1.00 donation and the RVCF will plant those trees just outside Ottawa in Richmond.

Cleaning the Capital

Another part of our yearly efforts with the City of Ottawa to keep Ottawa green is the Cleaning the Capital campaign.  This campaign has been running in the city since 1994 and since its inception nearly 856 000 volunteers have participated in cleanup jobs around the city.  The results are obvious as Ottawa takes recognition as one of the cleanest cities in Canada.  Our office is located in the west end of Ottawa just outside of Barrhaven so we though one of the trails close to our home base would be great for us to clean up a couple of times of year.  We send a couple of teams out twice a year to Sarsaparilla Trail just off Moodie Drive to pickup up garbage and misc branches to clear the walking paths for everyone to enjoy.  This is a great initiative here in Ottawa, one that everyone can get involved in with family friends or co-workers.  Be sure to check out the Cleaning the Capital link to find out how to sign up!

In collaboration to the Ottawa River Keeper, Capital Junk became a part of the Adopt-A-Road Program here in Ottawa.  This program run by the City of Ottawa allows people and businesses to adopt a section of an Ottawa road and in turn will keep up with the maintenance and cleanliness of that section of road.  Capital Junk has adopted a section of Carling Avenue just past Britannia, we thought this would be a great fit for us as we travel this section of road quite frequently for our junk removal and bin rental service.  For the last 3 years we have had team members picking up liter and monitoring the graffiti on this section of road.  Check out the link to see how you can get involved.  Adopt-A-Road

E-Waste Pickup and Dropoffs

Free E-Waste Drop Off Day

Since the beginning Capital Junk has been holding free e-waste drop-off days in order to help communities reduce the amount of electronic waste they are sending to the landfills.  Over the last 2 years because of our huge success with our e-waste drop off days, we thought it would be a really great idea to collect and donate any money made from the e-waste drop-off and donate it to charities that are near and dear to our hearts.  The Terry Fox Foundation has stood out as a Canadian hero and over the last couple of years we have been able to donate nearly 10,000 to this great cause.  Over the Christmas holiday season we have been holing a free e-waste pickup where the teams will actually come by and remove the e-waste from your home; with a $20.00 donation from everyone we have been able to donate almost $8000.00 to The Ottawa Food Bank.

With all the green initiatives here in Ottawa it is easy for Ottawa residents to live a more eco-friendly life.  If we all play a small role in reducing our carbon footprint the result will be huge!  Be sure to check out our calendar of events for upcoming green initiatives that you can join in on.
