Planning a green event? Take some advice from the California Men's Gathering Labor Weekend Retreat. Their event's mantra this year was"REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, OFFSET", and they lived up to it!
Some steps they took to reduce their environmental impact were,
substituted 180 stainless steel water bottles for 3,00 plastic bottles & cans
coordinated 57 share rides, reducing transportation-related carbon emissions by 75%
ate food transported from within 75 miles of the event location, reducing their food budget by 10 - 15%
used event t-shirts that were made from 100% organic cotton and were shipped in from 500 miles of the event location
The organizational committee reduced the event's carbon footprint as much as possible, and offset the rest.GreenJoe, one of the event organizers says it best, " It’s not just about carbon offsets. That should be your last step, after you’ve done everything you can to reduce your event’s footprint." - this is exactly what ask of our donors, "Reduce what you can, offset what you can't™."
Congratulations to the California Men's Gathering! Thinking of ways to reduce our environmental impacts may be hard at first, but is doable, and once these practices become habitual, they become really easy as well!
