Dry cleaning or wet cleaning? GreenEarth or Hydrocarbon?
If you’re looking for a greener alternative to the traditional dry cleaning solvent perchloroethylene, (perc), a toxic and environmentally dangerous chemical, here’s an excellent chart comparing dry cleaning methods compiled by a Seattle cleaner.
The chart, which was sent to me by Greener Cleaner owner Noam Frankel (pictured above), covers everything from harmful health effects and worker safety to the odor, manufacturer and environmental impact of the solvent. Some experts say the "greenest cleaners" are those who use "wet cleaning" or "liquid carbon dioxide" cleaning.
If you live in Chicago, here's a partial list of "eco-friendly" cleaners taken from a 2009 story by the Tribune's Melissa Clay.
