Eco Is In! - Report From The Color Marketing Group

Posted Aug 26 2008 11:36pm

As a past member of the Color Marketing Group, I’m always interested in their updates for color choices for the upcoming year. Don’t know who they are? Well, you’ve seen their work. You may have read about them here.

In a nutshell, they’re the folks that decide what the hot colors will be next year. Contrary to popular opinion it’s not a coincidence that you can find the exact shade of blue in both your paint and your wall paper border.

The Color Marketing Group is an association of color, design, marketing professionals who meet several times a year to share insights on trends and develop a palette of colors for each season that is then sent to major manufacturers. Many if not most major manufacturers of household and décor products subscribe to this service.

And guess what the Color Marketing Group is saying this year?

Eco is in!

The CMG has of course noted the trend toward green living and the colors they predict for 2008 reflect this consumer preference toward at least appearing eco friendly. Greens and browns and natural looking grays will be the big color next year for everything from carpets, to paint.

The bad new is that just because something looks natural doesn't mean it is. Earth tones and natural finishes will be used on commercial properties and products to make them seem environmentally friendly even if they aren't. The good news is that at home or at work, spaces will look and feel more connected to nature, even if the colour and materials used are far removed from nature itself.

Hmmm…does it count if we just look like we’re environmentally aware?
