While watching a movie, you may not think about the environmental impacts that result from its making, but the many on-set vehicles and generators create a lot of air pollution, and movie-set trashcans fill up quickly with water bottles, plastic utensils, and paper plates.
Some actors, directors, and studios are committed to greening the filmmaking process. Syriana, for example, starring eco-advocate George Clooney, was carbon-neutral. Director Sam Mendes insisted on going green while making Away We Go.
Now, New Mexico's film-and-TV union has published a green filmmaking guide, which offers techniques for film crews to reduce their environmental impact. The publishers are trying to get the book into circulation at film schools to encourage the next generation of movie makers to go green.
