Driving Currency

Posted Sep 12 2008 11:43am

Living in car centric California, I’m occasionally reminded just HOW car dependant my community is…when my car breaks down. This has happened quite frequently in the last few months with my 10-year-old car. Obviously, breakdowns are a bit different when it leaves both me and my 4-year-old stranded on various roadsides. Thank goodness for cell phones.

As a single person, a ride in the tow truck and a drop off at the local car rental place is a great option. Add in car seats and a schedule of children’s activities and it becomes a bit more complicated. That’s why I was intrigued by an article about a family that had given up their car.

I had never realized in our,” it takes a village” society how important driving currency has become as we shuttle our children from activity to activity. Though my philosophy precludes over-scheduling The Hamster, my “unscheduled” activities (museums, playgrounds, parks) take just as much, if not more driving, shared among the members of my “village”.

So, while I admire this family’s decision, which is both responsible ecologically and admirably thrifty, I’m not sure how I would manage to implement it. It’s intriguing to be sure.

As an advocate of going green within the confines of a not quite crunchy lifestyle, I was especially interested in the Flexcar arrangement this family had. Should this company expand further in those parts of the country that are sadly lacking in public transportation, I could see a real opportunity to save time, money and expulsion of greenhouse gasses!
