DOE, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) recognized a variety of organizations and one individual on October 20 for promoting the voluntary purchase of electricity from renewable energy sources, also known as green power. DOE honored six organizations as Green Power Leaders, including 3Degrees, which originates and markets renewable energy certificates from projects around the world; Bonneville Environmental Foundation, a non-profit green power supplier that re-invests the profits from their green power products in renewable energy development; SolarCity, one of the nation's largest solar and energy efficiency service providers; SunRun, which partners with solar installers to employ more than 2,500 local, green-collar workers; La Plata Electric Association, a cooperative in southwest Colorado that is a leader in the purchase of renewable energy certificates; and Portland General Electric, which is the utility that has the highest number of renewable power customers according to a survey by DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
The EPA honored 18 EPA Green Power Partners for their achievements in using green power. The winners are using more than 5 billion kilowatt-hours of green power annually, equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of more than 700,000 vehicles. Honorees at the Renewable Energy Markets Conference—held October 19–22 in Portland, Oregon—were in four categories. This year's Green Power Partners of the Year were Kohl's Department Stores, which increased its green power purchases last year by 60%; Motorola, which joined the Green Power Partnership in 2009 and increased its renewable energy certificate purchase by more than 50%; TD Bank, which used wind-derived renewable energy certificates to supply 100 percent of its electricity needs; and Whole Foods Market, the first Fortune 500 company to purchase wind power for 100% of its electricity use across its United States operations. Park City, Utah, and Corvallis, Oregon, shared the new Green Power Communities of the Year citation. Others were spotlighted for green power purchasing and on-site generation of green power. In addition, CRS recognized market leadership through four awards: the Best Green Power Education Outreach Program award, given to Arizona Public Service, for effective outreach programs focusing on education related to green power; Best Promotional Campaign by a Green Power Purchaser, given to Sundance Square, for promoting the use of green power in an innovative or compelling way; Best Marketing Campaign by a Green Power Supplier, given to Pacific Power and Rocky Mountain Power, for success in a campaign to gain new customers; and the Green Power Pioneer Award, given to Thor Hinckley of Portland General Electric, for outreach efforts, continuous achievement, and dedication to create the green power industry.
