Diamond Canon cams hope to raise cash for Red Cross

Want to raise the stakes in camera one-upmanship over your mates' Nikon D50s and Canon E350Ds? Try Canon's new Super Diamond IXUS, a one-off compact covered in 380 diamonds and auctioned to raise cash for charity. It'll set you back a cool €40,000 (about £27K). If that sounds extravagant, there are 9 others worth a mere €3500 each and - like the Super - all proceeds go to the Red Cross. Fortunately, the auction house of choice is eBay, not Sotheby's: I've asked Canon for the start date. Oddly, Canon makes no mention of whether the diamonds are 'conflict-free'. In my nagging fashion, I've asked about that too. 30/09/06 update: Canon's confirmed they are conflict-free, though they're not certified.
