Chew On This, Japan.

Posted Nov 26 2008 10:26am

Daily Kos has located an oddly compelling piece of media produced by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries ( MAFF ). It looks as though it could have been produced by the same people who make the airline-safety videos, but the topic is more globally relevant: How runaway diets and food demand are affecting Japan, and what can be done about it.

Here are some interesting facts from the video:

-Japan disposes more edible food than the entire global inventory of food aid.

-Even if all of Japan’s flat land were used just for farming, the nation wouldn’t be able to produce enough food for itself.

-Japan is the world’s largest net food importer.

The video ends by encouraging viewers to buy locally (or at least nationally) produced food and to take more accountability for what they consume and ingest.
