On June 21, 2007, Surfing Magazine announced their carbon neutral campaign. Becoming a CarbonFree™ business enabled them to offset the entire carbon footprint of their business operations, including their magazine's distribution. August 12, 2007, marked the date of their first carbon neutral publication, launching their second annual green issue. Surfing Magazine chose a mangrove reforestation carbon offset project in India. Shortly after, Kelly Slater announced he will be offsetting his entire career's carbon footprint. Having started his surfing career in 1991, Slater has traveled a total of 4 million miles. He chose a biodiversity reforestation carbon offset project in Nicaragua. Slater chose this project because it will restore a watershed leading right to the beach, ensuring the water quality for all water breaks in the area, including the threatened Playa Yankee wave.
This week, GreenSurfer and Carbonfund.org launch their CarbonFree™ Surfing program. The program offers offset packages to regular surfing destinations, such as Indonesia, Mexico and the Carribbean. The program also offers offset packages for career surfers, surfing shops and events.
