Most of my friends abandoned the high chair and moved quickly through the booster seat stage before seating their kids directly on dining room chairs at around d 4. We kept our DS in his vintage wooden toddler chair until he finally broke one of the leg supports by climbing on it at around 4-1/2. Since then he has been seated just like a big boy at the table like us….more or less. This seemed quite normal to me.
A recent visit to my friend Tan’s house though changed my mind. She had all her kids in booster seats. Geez, Tan, she’s almost 7! Wait, hmmm. I notice her shoulders are actually way above the table. Gee, she doesn’t have to raise her elbows around the table to eat. Hmm, food goes UP from the bowl to her mouth…maybe you’ve got something there.
The Hamster happily jumped into the extra booster at her house to eat lunch and, lo and behold, what a difference. I started thinking. Here I have been requesting good table manners from a child sitting in an awkward position. I’ve been asking him to write his name and complete his homework with his chin practically on the writing surface. This can’t be ergonomically healthy! What was I thinking?
I quickly pulled out the old booster seat from the Goodwill pile and reinstalled it at my table. OK- it’s not very attractive but, what a difference it makes to him.
But, wait, it seems I have more choices now, wood or retro or basic. I’m off to find a stylish booster seat that I’ll be proud to have at my table for a long time!
