The National Renewable Energy Laboratory published A Review of Operational Water Consumption and Withdrawal Factors for Electricity Generating Technologies (PDF 1.1 MB) , a report that consolidates primary literature estimates of water use during electricity generation by conventional and renewable technologies in the United States to convey the variability and uncertainty associated with water use in these technologies. The report finds that non-thermal renewables (such as wind) have the lowest water consumption factors.
