A New Kind of Mouse

Posted Feb 01 2011 7:15pm

Mouse M440 ECO from Fujitsu To find a mouse in your compost bin would normally be an unwelcome surprise, but when it comes to computer mice, using compostable components sounds like an inspired idea.

Fujitsu's new Mouse M440 ECO is made from "100% bio material," which, GreenBiz explains, are the wood-based substances Arboform and Biograde . And the mouse's cable is made sans PVC. In addition to the biodegradable mouse, Fujitsu has produced a wood-covered laptop and keyboard that incorporate bioplastics into their design.

While not quite ready for the backyard compost bin, Fujitsu's new mouse shell can be composted and recycled in an industrial setting .

For those of us still using petroleum-based mice and keyboards, recycling options do exist. E-waste remains a significant problem, but several new e-recycling companies have emerged — a sign that more consumers are demanding ways to keep electronics out of the landfill.
