A Hip-Hop Video From the Slums of Nairobi Praises Bikes, Warms Hearts

Posted Feb 24 2011 1:57pm

A Kenyan hip-hop group's YouTube video, "Me and My Bike," earned the top spot in the  1 Minute to Save the World film competition. The contest asked young people around the world to create one-minute videos about climate change for a chance to win $8,000. The lively "Me and My Bike" and seven other winners tackled the issue in a range of styles, from the heartwarming, refreshingly low-tech " Save Water " to the beautifully tragic claymation production " Don't Let it Drown ."

The number-one video (above) features members of Wafalme , a group of young rappers from Nairobi's slums who raise awareness about global issues such as poverty, education, and the environment. If the catchy " Me and My Bike " has you itching for more of the group's positive, upbeat rhymes, check out  " Kidz 4 Kidz in Haiti "  and " Trash is Cash ."
