What cause one side of hip to be higer than other side?

I recently find out that my left side of my is quarter inch higher than my right side my hip. Therefore my left leg seems shorter than my right leg. I believe had this problem all my life but just notice it recently. Could I had a birth defect but it wasn't noticable until I was adult? Can it be genetical because I had relative that I had one leg shorter or seem shorter than the other leg?
