Why was Alexander Fleming Called a Quack? by Jeffrey Dach MD

Dr. Alexander Fleming was credited with the discovery of penicillin in 1928. Prior to being credited, Dr Alexander Fleming was called a quack for suggesting penicillin be used as a medicine. Alexander Fleming wrote, "Penicillin sat on my shelf for 12 years while I was called a quack." quoted by Jeffrey Dach

Obviously Alexander Fleming was not a quack.  He had discovered antibiotics, the greatest discovery in modern medicine.  Calling Alexander Fleming a quack is similar to calling Luis Pasteur a quack, another medical genius who revolutionized medicine and saved millions of lives.  He was obviously was not a quack.

In 1999, Time Magazine named Fleming one of the 100 most important people of the century  for his discovery "  It was a discovery that would change the course of history. The active ingredient in that mould, which Fleming named penicillin, turned out to be an infection-fighting agent of enormous potency. When it was finally recognised for what it was, the most efficacious life-saving drug in the world, penicillin would alter forever the treatment of bacterial infections. "
