That's one of most general questions. Let's start with a benign:

1. It may have to do with poor blood circulation

2. it may be due to swollen lymph nodes, which means, there is an infection somewhere, i.e. attack of germs or virus in the body, and the body is responding.

3. tumors: benign and malign. Benign will stay the same size and/or go away. Malign will change in size or feel (tenderness to touch). 

It is good to see a doctor if there is any change over a course of few weeks.
