Ellen inquires…When is the best time to get dermabrasion on a scar?

The Right Brain responds:

As the Beauty Brains attorneys would like us to point out, that’s definitely a question for your doctor. (Sheesh! I can’t believe we actually have to pay for such stellar legal advice!)  Anyway, we can’t give you medical advice but we can point you toward some helpful hints.

According to studies that are nicely summarized on Medscape , dermabrasion is effective at improving the appearance of many types of scars including those from acne and tattoo removal!  Those types of scars can be treated almost anytime, apparently.  But if you’re talking about scars from some kind of trauma or surgery, that’s a different story. According to the research, you should wait 6 to 8 weeks to dermabrade those scars because (and we quote from Medscape) “the late proliferative and early remodeling phases of wound healing are interrupted and partially reset, resulting in an improved final cosmetic result.”  Did we mention that you should ask your doctor about this?

Also, in case you weren’t aware, there are a few types of over the counter products that have been shown to be effective in reducing scars. You might consider trying silicone scar sheets or silicone gel. As noted in this PubMed study , both are effective in reducing the appearance of scar tissue.

If you do decide to try a scar removing  product (after signing all the proper release forms from our attorneys, of course) you can shop for them using our link.
