What would cause a sudden loss of feeling and ability to control muscles in an otherwise healthy 17 year old female?

The numbness started in her legs and has progressed throughout her body. She can barely breathe or swallow now and can't feel her body. The doctors said her immune system is attacking her nerves. Does anyone know what this sydrome might be called?
