What precautions can you take if you expect to be on your feet for 24 hours?

Posted by Elaine S.

My name is Elaine and I am the Event Experience Exec for Stanford Dance Marathon 2008. SDM is a 24-hour event that aims to mobilize the Stanford community by showing solidarity in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We dance for 24 hours, and our proceeds go toward Partners in Health. As the Event Experience Exec, it's my job to make sure we all have a good time. If you (or a physical therapist) can offer us any suggestions, they'd be much appreciated. You can reach me at elainesu@stanford.edu. Thanks!

Not an expert, but.... Make sure you wear super comfortable, flat shoes with a strong sole and uppers made from a pliable material. I would also suggest against wearing new shoes--if you can avoid blisters, you definitely should. Checking with a podiatrist on the best kinds of shoes to wear for extended periods of time is also a good bet. Also, make sure you drink lots of water and stay hydrated. I know people who have experienced foot swelling from standing for long periods of time, and I've heard this can be avoided by flushing out toxins with lots of liquids. Good luck!
