Bamamichelle asks…I have PCOS and wondered whats the most un-painful way of removing facial hair above lips and under chin?
The Beauty Brains respond:
When this question was first posted in our Forum, our readers came to Bamamichelle’s rescue with a variety of suggestions for her to try:
IPL devices (like the Tria) and thermal devices (like the NoNo!)
The two device options are probably the most confusing to people. (They’re also the most expensive!) Which is better for hair removal, light or heat? A recent study published in “ Lasers in Surgery and Medicine ” by Brian S. Biesman, MD, indicates that the thermal devices may not be much better than shaving.
That’s because the thermal method doesn’t seem to degrade the root as much as pulsed light. The study concluded that “shaving and the hot-wire device are indistinguishable in short-term or long-term effect, based on both visual assessment of the photographs and statistical analysis of the hair counts.” So if you want to reduce how much unwanted hair grows back over time, you might be better off with a pulsed light device.
One word of caution: the study was funded by Tria Beauty which is the company that makes at home laser hair removal devices, so it’s in their favor to show that competitive devices such as the NoNo! are not as effective.
Both of these devices are expensive so do your research before spending a lot of money on hair removal!
