What does red/pink spots on my tonsils mean

whenever im sick its always ton but a couple of weeks ago i saw i had red/pink spots instead of white spots. my throat was sore but went away after about 3 or 4 days but yesterday my troat was again sore and today i looked but my tonsils were just very red and sore. what were the red/pink spots?
